The Great Licensed Electrician or Handyman Debate
I

n this life, we are going to be faced with some tough questions, such as... “Do I tell her I love her?” or “Should I take the job in Budapest?” or “It’s not Tuesday. Should I order sushi?” While these questions can be trying, we can all agree that the one question that plagues our modern world is whether to hire a licensed electrician or handyman who does electrical work. This dilemma has so haunted my dreams that it caused a complete career shift in order for me to find the answer.
When it comes to hiring licensed electricians or handymen, both can offer valuable services. And before agreeing to project terms, let’s examine the differences between the two in more detail, to determine what your current project requires:
The Benefits of Hiring a Licensed Electrician
If you're looking for credibility, you can rely on the facts that a licensed electrician has been professionally trained, passed an examination, and been mandated by the county and/or state to perform electrical work. This work can include, but is not limited to, working on complicated electrical projects requiring design and load calculations that will meet regulated electrical and building codes. They are also well versed in safety standards that will protect your home or office, people in the project's vicinity, and themselves. Licensed electricians carry their own insurance, which ensures that your property will be completely covered if anything causes damage or harm during the project.
While they will likely cost more (and in my opinion, be better looking), you're assured that their work Is permitted and increases the value of your home or business.
Handyman
If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, handymen are a versatile option. When it comes to electrical tasks specifically, their work should be limited to less complex items such as replacing receptacles, mounting lights, or adding replacement blades to a ceiling fan. Hiring a handyman is a personal convenience-- many do not have formal electrical training, nor are they mandated by a governing body. It is probable that they are not current on electrical safety codes, and any damage or accidents will be the responsibility of a homeowner/ business owner.
The trade off of this lower expense is that handymen may not offer offer the peace of mind to know that the work was done right by a professional.
